Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of Ava DuVernay took place on the 24th day of August 1972, in Long Beach California. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise encouraged her passion for artistic expression and creative thinking. The aunt was on the night shift as a nurse to ensure she could follow her passion for theater and art during the day. DuVernay immediately became enthralled when she showed her that 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay learned by example the power of art as a vehicle for activism. DuVernay was taught to be socially conscious by her mother. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where the father of DuVernay was born and brought up. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the historic Civil Rights marches through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. The summers DuVernay spent there would later inspire her to write a script for a film based on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his Civil Rights Movement. In 1990 DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. In the year 1990, she graduated from Saint Joseph High school in Lakewood California. DuVernay started producing for the broadcast industry while she was still in the college. She started as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay recalled being given the responsibility of looking over the home and looking through the waste from one of the jury. Her tasks to complete left her unhappy and so, after deciding not to continue in journalism, she moved on to the field of public relations. DuVernay began her first position as a publicity specialist in a small production studio right out of high school. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency launched a number of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
